Born in 1836 and educated at Merton College, Oxford, he began his ecclesiastical career with a curacy at Horsell and was successively Vicar of St Matthew Newington, Secretary of the Church Missionary Society and a Prebendary of St Paul's Cathedral〔During which time he wrote "Progress of the Church in London"(1887)〕 before his elevation to the episcopate.
In 1913 he officiated and led prayers at the opening ceremony of The King's Hall, Herne Bay, Kent.〔''Herne Bay Press'' 12 July 1913: "Royal visit"〕
